Synopsis

The book Inedita by Kazimierz Twardowski (1866–1938), volume I – Logic (part II) consists of two segments. The first is the previously unpublished notes of the founder of the Lvov-Warsaw School from lectures he gave at the University of Lvov in the field of broadly understood logic. The second segment is fragments of Twardowski's work Fundamental concepts of didactics and logic for use in teachers' seminars devoted to logical issues and published in 1901 in Lvov by the Pedagogical Society.

The above-mentioned notes in the form of manuscripts and typescripts are deposited in Warsaw, in the Kazimierz Twardowski’s Archive in the Joint Libraries of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Warsaw, the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Philosophical Society, i.e. in the Joint Libraries of Kazimierz Twardowski.

The titles of lectures delivered by the founder of the Lvov-Warsaw School at the University of Lvov, notes from which were published in this volume are:

(1) Logic. Winter course 1895/1896 (main text of lectures, supplement to lectures and summary of lectures);

(2) On the Method of Scientific Research in two versions – from the academic years: 1898/1899 and 1902/1903, as well as a supplement to the above lectures;

(3) Logic for medics – from the academic years: 1920/1921, 1921/1922 and 1925/1926.

(1) and (2) are course lectures for students of the Faculty of Philosophy, (3) – for students of the Faculty of Medicine. All published lecture notes were transcribed and elaborated by Aleksandra Horecka

As to fragments of Fundamental concepts of didactics and logic... (1901), the reader will find in this volume: (a) the entire second part entitled "The main principles of logic", which deals with judgments and their truthfulness, representations (including concepts), reasoning, inference, proof, methods of scientific research and the scientific system, as well as (b) § 4 of the fourth chapter of the third part "On school", which is devoted to making science more conscious and which contains elements of the theory of iconic signs, and (c) fifth chapter of the third part regarding theory of questions and answers. All parts of the second segment were transcribed by Alicja Chybińska, who is also a co-author of their preparation for publication.
