Synopsis

This publication acquaints the Polish reader with the legacy of Adam of Saint Victor (1st half of the 12th century), a brilliant theologian, poet and musician, an author hitherto virtually absent from Polish literature. This legacy consists – as is currently believed, although the issue is still under discussion – of fifty-eight sequences for various days of the liturgical year. It is worth emphasising that the works composed by Adam come from the period when the sequence genre was at its peak (the 12th century). The main part of the book is therefore filled with the texts of Adam's sequences: two textual versions of these works, the original Latin and the translated Polish, have been placed here in parallel. The translations were made by the following translators: Tadeusz Gacia, Łukasz Libowski, Marta Helena Nowak, Agnieszka Stry-charczuk, Adam Wilczyński and Piotr Wilk, a team established in the academic year 2021/2022 at the Latin Philology Department of the Institute of Literary Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. With regard to the translation, it should be noted that as far as possible efforts were made to make it metrical – some se-quences were metrically translated in their entirety. The translations are also accompanied by concise footnotes, primarily identifying references or cross-references to specific passages of Scripture. A comprehensive introduction completes the book. It is in two parts. The first introductory text Adam of Saint Victor and his poetic output – written by Agnieszka Strycharczuk – on the one hand presents the figure of Adam, the context of his life and work, and on the other hand introduces issues related to the genre of the sequence and the sequences whose authorship is attributed to Adam. On the other hand, in the second introductory text Harmony between everything and everyone. Evocations, printed in the publication both in the original French version and in the Polish translation – written by Patrice Sicard – the main “topics that «inhabited» the soul of the cantor Adam” and which consequently “inhabited” and “inhabit” also in his poetry, are presented. Thus, Sicard's text proves to be an excellent introduction into the inner world of Adam's sequences. The publication closes with a bibliography that lists the works to which one can refer when conducting research on the Adam’s sequences, in addition to factual, biblical and personal indexes.

Łukasz Libowski, John Paul Catholic University of Lublin

Priest of the Diocese of Opole. MA in theology, MA in classical philology, BA in philosophy. Doctoral student at the Institute of Philosophy of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. As his doctoral thesis, he is preparing an edition of the first two books of Marsilius of Inghen's commentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics. Translator of past texts, including Victorine; author of a Polish translation of the treatise On Lying by Augustine of Hippona: Cracow 2022, «scriptum» Publishing House.

Tadeusz Gacia, John Paul Catholic University of Lublin

Priest of the Diocese of Kielce. PhD in humanities in the field of literary studies with a specialisation in Roman literature. Head of the Department of Latin Philology at the Institute of Literary Studies of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. Author of publications on agonistic metaphoric in Christian antiquity, the poetry of Venantius Fortunatus and epigraphic poetry of the Carolingian period. Translator of the writings of Bede the Venerable and Amalarius of Metz, awarded honorifica laude in the Certamen Latinum Salesianum I under the auspices of the Pontificium Institutum Altioris Latinitatis for a text written in Latin.

Marta Helena Nowak, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University

MA in history, MA in classical philology; graduate of history studies at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and of the Interdisciplinary Individual Humanist and Social Studies Studies at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, specialising in classical philology. A doctoral student at the Faculty of History of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
