Synopsis

In August 2021, Fr. Karol Dębiński's memoirs of the years 1867-1915, previously known only in typewritten form, were published in print. They contain the author's memories of his school days spent in Podlasie, his seminary years in Lublin and his student years in Saint Petersburg. Other threads include the paths of priestly work in various fields under the difficult conditions of the Russian partition. The author described the years of his ministry as an associate, chaplaincy at the Lublin Castle and pastorate in villages and towns in Lublin and Podlasie. Plotting the details of the course of his own priestly life, he showed at the same time the religious life of the faithful, the activities of the Lublin church administration, personnel policy in the diocese, profiles of members of the Polish episcopate, the milieu of people connected with the Roman Catholic Theological Academy in St. Petersburg, and relations with the Holy See. The content of the diaries was provided with a broad context of local and supra-local history, as well as a number of insights of a detailed nature, especially evaluations of events and people. This material is an extremely valuable source providing direct insight into the social and religious situation of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries from the perspective of a participant in the national and ecclesiastical life of the time. The source material made available therefore required scientific reflection among specialists in history and theology. The scientific reflection was first undertaken in the framework of a symposium held at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin in June 2022, which brought together representatives of several domestic and foreign centers, as well as a large number of students and other listeners. The results of the conference were, at the next stage, comprised of a series of articles and included in this book. The study of the content of the diaries, taking into account the necessary situational context, resulted in the scientific deepening of such topics as parish pastoral ministry under the Russian partition, education and intellectual culture of the clergy of the time and existing interdenominational relations.
